Honduras
Perla Project – Brus Laguna
Electrifying rural areas to improve livelihoods

The PERLA project in Guanaja, Honduras features 600 kWp of solar capacity, 576 kWh of battery storage, and a 3184 kVA thermal generation backup system. Completed within 10 months, this system was meticulously designed to address the challenges of a grid with unbalanced demand and limited access, overcoming both complex logistics and the region’s climatic adversities.
The installation reflects a careful adaptation to the local electrical grid’s needs, enabling stable and efficient integration.
By addressing the specific consumption and demand patterns, the system ensures balanced, continuous operation, providing the community of Guanaja with a reliable and constant energy supply.

Before the project, Guanaja relied primarily on diesel generators to meet its high electricity demand. This resulted in an energy supply that was not only insufficient but also polluting, highly expensive, and unsustainable.
Moreover, the island’s climatic conditions—such as high humidity, salinity, strong winds, and frequent rains—further complicated the stability and reliability of the energy supply. This situation negatively impacted the quality of life of its 8,000 residents and limited their ability to withstand extreme weather events.
Guanaja, located in the Caribbean Sea off the northern coast of Honduras, is one of the Bay Islands, alongside Roatán and Utila. Known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine biodiversity, the island features lush green mountains and is a popular destination for ecotourism and diving on the world’s second-largest coral reef.
