13 September, 2021Last Friday, December 4, Solartia received the International Project of the Year award at Solar & Storage Live, the largest renewable energy event in the United Kingdom, for the Caribbean Pride project: a hybrid microgrid on Corn Island, Nicaragua. This award recognizes the best international solar energy project with energy storage for its impact and impact development.
Solartia was selected as the winner from a shortlist of companies with outstanding projects that included Emirates Flights, SMA Lidl and the Swedish company Nilar. In addition to Solartia and Siemens-Gamesa — lthe two winning Spanish companies — important players in the global energy sector were also represented and recognized the most outstanding projects of the year in the different categories. You can watch the complete video of the event here.
This award is a great recognition of Solartia's work for its engineering quality and its firm commitment to the development of complex, multidisciplinary, pioneering and purposeful projects. This award is also a recognition to the Inter-American Development Bank for its interest in achieving universal access to electricity in the region as well as to the Government of Nicaragua for its focus on raising the national electricity coverage index.
CARIBBEAN PRIDE
Located on Corn Island, Nicaragua, a small island of 12.9 square kilometers in the Caribbean Sea, Caribbean Pride is a hybrid microgrid that has improved the quality of life of more than 8,000 people who now enjoy clean and affordable energy. To achieve this, Solartia has built a microgrid that integrates a 2.1 MW photovoltaic plant, a 2.2 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system, 2 backup 900 kW diesel generators, and all self-governed by the Solartia Hybrid control system to manage the power and meet the island's demand.
The project, part of Nicaragua's National Sustainable Electrification & Renewable Energy Program (PNESER), was carried out thanks to the cooperation of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Nicaragua.
